Background of the study:
Food taboos are a significant aspect of the cultural fabric in Abak Local Government Area, reflecting deep-rooted beliefs and social norms. These taboos, often dictated by tradition, religion, or social practices, regulate dietary habits and have implications for health, social identity, and cultural continuity (Udo, 2023). The cultural factors influencing food taboos include ancestral myths, spiritual beliefs, and communal practices passed down through generations (Ifeoma, 2024). As modern influences and nutritional science gain prominence, these traditional restrictions are increasingly scrutinized. However, many community members continue to adhere to food taboos as markers of identity and cultural heritage (Chukwu, 2025). This study explores how these cultural factors shape dietary practices and investigates the extent to which modern influences are altering traditional food taboos. It also examines the potential health and social impacts of these evolving practices, thereby contributing to a comprehensive understanding of cultural persistence amid change (Okoro, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
In Abak, food taboos have historically influenced dietary practices and social interactions. However, modernization and changing lifestyles have led to conflicts between traditional beliefs and contemporary nutritional practices. There is limited research on how these cultural factors influence food taboos today and the consequences for community health and cultural identity. This study aims to bridge that gap by examining the underlying cultural determinants and their impacts (Nwosu, 2023).
